iGaming Ontario, explained in plain language

Every serious page about Ontario gambling mentions iGaming Ontario, usually without explaining it. Here is the whole picture in five minutes: what iGO is, what it is not, and why the distinction changes how safe your deposit is.

What iGaming Ontario is

iGaming Ontario is a government agency, a subsidiary of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, created to "conduct and manage" internet gambling in the province, which is the legal formula Canada's Criminal Code requires. Private companies cannot simply offer gambling to Ontarians; they operate on iGO's behalf, under commercial agreements that make iGO the legal conductor of every bet.

That structure, launched on April 4, 2022, is what turned Ontario from a grey market into the largest regulated iGaming market in North America. Operators that spent years serving Ontarians offshore (bet365, 888, LeoVegas among them) moved onto Ontario licences, and brands like BetMGM and FanDuel entered fresh.

What it means for your money

Three concrete protections flow from a site holding an iGO agreement. Your funds sit in accounts segregated from the operator's own money. The games you play carry RTPs certified by accredited labs, checked against what is actually served. And when a dispute goes wrong, the escalation path ends at the AGCO: a regulator with jurisdiction, published enforcement, and the power to fine. It has used that power, including six-figure penalties against operators for responsible-gambling failures and misleading promotions.

What iGO is not

It is not a consumer helpline (disputes go through the operator first, then the AGCO), it is not OLG (the crown corporation runs its own site alongside the market), and it is not a guarantee of good service, because registered operators still range from excellent to mediocre, which is what our Ontario ranking measures. Registration is the floor, not the ceiling.

How to use this knowledge

One habit: before depositing anywhere, check the brand against iGO's public operator list. Registered means the protections above apply. Unregistered means you are relying on an offshore regulator's goodwill, which is sometimes fine but never equivalent.
