What Does Spread Mean in Betting?
The spread is a points handicap the sportsbook applies to even out a mismatched game. A -6.5 favourite must win by 7 or more to cover; a +6.5 underdog covers by winning outright or losing by 6 or fewer. Both sides are priced near -110, so you risk C$110 to win C$100 whichever side you take.
How a Point Spread Works
Say the Argonauts host the Redblacks as 6.5-point favourites, written Argonauts -6.5 (-110). Bet Toronto and they must win by at least 7 for your ticket to cash. Bet Ottawa +6.5 and you win if they pull the upset or lose by 6 or fewer. The final score 27-23 to Toronto wins for Ottawa backers, because 23 plus 6.5 beats 27.
The half point exists to prevent ties. At a whole number like -6, a 7-point win covers, a 5-point win loses, and a win by exactly 6 is a push: the bet is void and stakes are refunded. Books use half points, called the hook, to keep money in play, and buying or selling that hook around key margins is its own sub-discipline.
The spread's purpose is balance. A moneyline on a lopsided game might be -400/+310, which attracts little two-way action. Handicapping the favourite by 6.5 points turns the same game into a near coin flip that the book can price at -110 both ways and collect its margin safely.
Spreads in Canadian Betting: Puck Lines and Key Numbers
Hockey's version is the puck line, fixed at 1.5 goals with the odds doing the balancing. A strong favourite might be -1.5 (+170), meaning they must win by two or more, while the underdog is +1.5 (-210). Baseball's run line works identically at 1.5 runs. Basketball and football use true variable spreads, from -1 to -20 or more.
In football, margins cluster on key numbers because of how scoring works: 3 and 7 are the big ones in the NFL, and they matter in the CFL too, where field goals decide plenty of games. The difference between +2.5 and +3.5 straddles the most common margin in the sport, which is why sharp bettors will pay extra juice to cross a key number but not for cosmetic half points elsewhere.
Covering the spread is the phrase for beating the handicap, and it is deliberately separate from winning the game. A team can lose the game and cover, or win the game and fail to cover. Once you internalize that a spread bet is a wager on margin, not on victory, box scores start reading differently.
